US Offers Millions for Information on Iranian Cyber Commander

The U.S. State Department has announced a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the identification or location of Amir Yaryab, a senior official within Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' cyber warfare and electronic warfare unit. According to U.S. authorities, Yaryab serves as the deputy head of cyber operations for this unit, which is responsible for cyber warfare and electronic warfare activities. Washington also links him to organizations and units allegedly involved in cyberattacks and intelligence gathering.

The reward is part of the U.S. "Rewards for Justice" program, which offers payments for intelligence on individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments and engaging in malicious cyber activities, particularly those targeting U.S. critical infrastructure. The State Department claims that Iran-linked cyber networks have attacked various sectors, including defense, energy, maritime transport, finance, telecommunications, media, and transportation.

This is not the first time Washington has offered substantial rewards for information on Iranian cyber personnel. The announcement comes amid increasing U.S. pressure on Tehran concerning security and cyberspace. Simultaneously, U.S. allies are reportedly questioning Washington's capacity to manage multiple threats concurrently, with discussions in global capitals focusing on how U.S. domestic economic issues and political polarization might affect its military capabilities.

Matthew Kroenig, a strategist at the Atlantic Council, noted that deterrence relies on a state's actual capabilities and adversaries' belief in its willingness to use force. He observed that while previously the question was whether the U.S. would act, adversaries now increasingly perceive U.S. capabilities as weaker than before.
