New York Hate Crimes Surge, Jewish Community Most Targeted

New York City has experienced a significant rise in hate crimes this year, with over half of these incidents targeting members of the Jewish community, according to new data released by the NYPD. From the start of 2026, 425 hate crimes were recorded, an increase of 15.8% compared to the 367 incidents during the same period in 2025. Crimes targeting Jewish individuals specifically rose by 8%, constituting more than half of all confirmed hate crimes in the first eight months of the year, despite Jewish people making up only about 10% of the city's population. The NYPD noted that while last summer was the safest on record by their metrics, hate crimes continued to climb. This trend includes an assault on a worshipper inside a synagogue in the city approximately two weeks ago. Leaders within the Jewish community have accused New York City Mayor Eric Adams of responsibility for the surge in antisemitism, citing his strong stances and statements against Israel, including accusations of genocide in Gaza and calls for the arrest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
