Party Leaders Face Crucial Decision Before Candidate List Deadline

With five days remaining until the deadline for submitting candidate lists for the upcoming elections, two party leaders, Ofer Vinter of "Am Israel" and Hili Tropper of "Zionist Reservists," are at a crossroads regarding their political futures. Both Vinter and Tropper launched new parties with the ambition of leading independently, rather than accepting high placements on existing lists. However, their paths are complicated by electoral realities and their respective political alignments.

Vinter has indicated he would recommend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for another term, suggesting his party, if it passes the electoral threshold, could provide Netanyahu with a crucial 61st seat. Tropper, conversely, aligns with the "Change Bloc" and is associated with Gadi Eisenkot. Despite their differing political camps, both leaders face challenges in gaining sufficient support. Tropper's party is not consistently clearing the electoral threshold in polls, while Vinter's party shows fluctuating poll numbers, raising concerns about its stability.

The dilemma for both Vinter and Tropper in the coming days is whether to persist with their independent parties, risking failure to pass the electoral threshold, or to accept advantageous placements on established party lists. Accepting such placements could allow them to retain some factional independence and influence post-election.

Vinter has reportedly received offers for reserved spots from both Bezalel Smotrich's Religious Zionism party and the Likud, potentially securing three to four of his associates seats in the Knesset and enabling separate coalition negotiations. Tropper may also be able to bring one associate, notably Shira Shapira, mother of fallen hero Aner Shapira, onto an existing list. Sources within the "Change Bloc" indicate that Eisenkot and Naftali Bennett are actively engaging with Tropper, offering various proposals to prevent vote wastage, with Tropper leaning towards joining Eisenkot.

Vinter, however, appears to be navigating a more complex situation. He has publicly rejected merging with established parties and resisted pressure from Netanyahu and Smotrich, stating he will not unite with "old parties" and that his supporters will not be swayed. He recently surprised by demanding that a universal conscription law be passed before any government is formed, a condition for his entry into a coalition. Despite this, he reiterated his intention to recommend Netanyahu. The deadline for list submissions is Tuesday at 10:00 PM, and the decisions made by Vinter and Tropper are expected to significantly impact both political blocs.
