Lebanese President Accuses Israel Amid Prisoner Release

Lebanese President Michel Aoun continued his public accusations against Israel, despite Israel transferring five Lebanese prisoners back to Lebanon as a gesture of goodwill. Aoun stated on Thursday that Israel continues to violate the framework agreement reached in Washington during talks involving Lebanon, the US, and Israel. He made these remarks during a meeting with the Dutch Minister of Trade and Development, coinciding with Lebanese media reports of the prisoner release.

Aoun also asserted that the Lebanese army is fulfilling its role in the designated areas, dismissing any claims to the contrary as attempts to damage the army's reputation. This statement comes despite previous instances where Aoun himself has expressed doubts about his country's military.

The prisoner release was described by Lebanese media as a "goodwill gesture." Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that the five Lebanese individuals released by Israel are not members of any terrorist organization and have not engaged in terrorist activities.

In related news, France and Italy have announced plans to maintain an international military presence in Lebanon, even as UN peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) are scheduled to officially withdraw from the country at the end of 2026, after 48 years. It remains unclear if President Aoun directly requested this continued presence, but his preference for UNIFIL remaining in Lebanon has been previously stated.
