Rabbi Reider Uses Parable to Explain Spiritual Preparation for High Holidays

Rabbi Yisrael Reider delivered a special discourse on the weekly Torah portion "Nitzavim-Vayelech," drawing parallels between the portion's themes and the spiritual preparation for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

The portion begins with the verse "You stand today, all of you," which the Sages interpret as a reference to the Day of Judgment, when every individual stands before God. Rabbi Reider employed a well-known parable about a king who offered immense gifts to those who would come to his palace. Some rushed immediately, while others delayed. A key figure in the parable found a luxurious, fast carriage but, in his eagerness, failed to notice it was traveling in the opposite direction of the palace.

Rabbi Reider applied this to the month of Elul, the period leading up to Rosh Hashanah. He noted that while some individuals begin their spiritual preparation early in the month and others intensify their efforts closer to the holiday, all progress is valuable. However, he cautioned against becoming so engrossed in the "journey" of spiritual activity that one forgets to ensure they are heading in the correct direction, towards God and repentance.

The rabbi emphasized the importance of introspection, repentance, and prayer, particularly during the "Slichot" (penitential prayers) services held before Rosh Hashanah. He expressed hope that through these efforts, individuals will be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet new year.
