Rabbi Sternbuch Rules on Kosher Status of E-Cigarettes

Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch has addressed the question of whether electronic cigarettes require kosher certification, particularly concerning potential non-kosher ingredients and their use on fast days. According to Rabbi Sternbuch, it is important to use an e-cigarette that has kosher certification or to ensure that its raw materials are derived solely from plant-based sources.

Unlike traditional cigarettes which produce smoke, e-cigarettes produce vapor from a liquid contained within the device. A key component of this liquid is glycerin, which can be derived from animal sources. Therefore, Rabbi Sternbuch emphasizes the need to verify the kosher status of these ingredients.

Furthermore, Rabbi Sternbuch advised caution regarding the use of e-cigarettes on the Ninth of Av, a major fast day. He explained that the vapor produced creates noticeable moisture in the mouth, which could be considered akin to tasting, and thus potentially prohibited on such a day.

The article also briefly touches upon a separate halachic question regarding the sale of a used car. A seller who is aware of a defect must disclose it to the buyer, and cannot rely on the buyer conducting their own inspection. While price negotiation is permitted, concealing a known flaw is forbidden.
