Prison Service Commissioner to Face Charges Despite Minister's Objections
The Israeli State Prosecutor's Office has decided to indict the Commissioner of the Prison Service, Kobie Yaakobi, on charges of breach of trust and obstruction of justice. The indictment is expected to be filed in the coming weeks.
The central suspicion is that Yaakobi revealed information about a covert investigation into the former commander of the Judean and Samarian District police, Superintendent Avi Shai Moalem, to Moalem himself, thereby allegedly exposing the investigation's existence.
Yaakobi was initially slated for indictment pending a hearing in April. Since then, he has claimed serious flaws in the investigation against him and presented materials he believes cast doubt on the investigators' conduct. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also defended Yaakobi, calling the case a "frame-up."
Despite these defenses and the materials presented, the prosecution maintains that the decision to indict Yaakobi stands. Meanwhile, investigations into two senior officers close to Yaakobi, Alona Shoshan and Lior Abudraham, are nearing their conclusion, with a decision expected soon.
