Several notable moments unfolded at the G7 summit on Tuesday in Evian, France, at the foot of the Alps near the Swiss border. The seven leaders of the industrialized democracies arrived one after another, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who landed in nearby Geneva, Switzerland, and was received by Swiss President Guy Parmelin.
Trump again drew attention from cameras and social media. One widely shared image showed him shaking hands with French President Emmanuel Macron with his palm turned downward and his hand on top, a posture online posts described as a humiliating display of dominance. In another official summit photo, Trump was seen speaking at length with Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, while seemingly ignoring the French president beside them.
At the G7 table, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented Trump with a football jersey from the World Cup currently being held in the Americas. The back of the shirt carried Trump’s name and the number 47, a nod to the 47th president of the United States. Trump appeared to enjoy the unusual gift.
When asked whether he was frustrated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump answered, “No!” He added that the two men have a friendship and “close relations.”
