Israel Prepares for UK Ban on West Bank Settlements, Considers Retaliation

Israel is preparing for a potential British decision to impose a trade ban on Israeli settlements in the West Bank, with the UK expected to announce the move within weeks. The scope of the anticipated ban remains undefined.

Israeli officials view the potential British action as politically motivated, possibly linked to the Labour Party, and are considering reciprocal measures. A political source indicated that Israel has communicated that any country acting against it will face consequences. If London proceeds, it could be excluded from a framework agreement concerning Lebanon.

The British Foreign Secretary announced on Tuesday that the UK will unveil a series of steps in the coming weeks in response to the situation in West Bank settlements. This announcement follows plans for construction in the E1 area, a location of international concern due to its potential impact on the geographical contiguity of West Bank areas if settlement expansion occurs there.

Last week, The Times of London reported that the new British government is preparing a tougher stance on West Bank settlements compared to its predecessor. The British government is reportedly considering sanctions on trade with settlements, a more stringent measure than previously implemented.

This shift is particularly linked to the E1 construction plans. The new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, who took office last month, had previously expressed his intention to increase pressure on the Israeli government and impose additional punitive measures on individuals and entities in Israel. Burnham also stated he would examine a trade ban on settlements deemed illegal by the British government and called for further steps to pressure the Israeli government.
