France Mulls Sanctions on Israeli Settlers, Supports Palestinian Elections

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Friday that France is calling for new sanctions against those responsible for settler violence in the West Bank, which he described as "terrorist acts" threatening the two-state solution and Palestinian dignity.

Barrot specifically pointed to the need to prevent products originating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank from entering the European Union market. He drew a parallel to the EU's 2014 decision to block imports from Crimea following its annexation, arguing that trade with illegally seized territory is unacceptable.

"The European Union, which has the authority in the area of trade, cannot accept that products originating from illegal settlements in Judea and Samaria enter the EU territory illegally," Barrot stated, questioning how the EU could support such illegal activity through its trade.

In addition to sanctions, Barrot proposed that European foreign ministers send a support mission to the Palestinian Authority in September to aid in organizing parliamentary and presidential elections. He emphasized that elections are a crucial tool for the Palestinian people's self-determination and for establishing legitimate interlocutors for the international community, referencing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's commitment to holding elections by summer 2025.
