Chief Rabbi Demands Reversal of Punishment for Religious Soldiers

Israel's Chief Rabbi, Kalman Meir-Bar, has formally requested that the IDF Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, and Defense Minister, Israel Katz, revoke the punishment issued to soldiers from the Givati Brigade. The soldiers were reportedly penalized for refusing to board an armored personnel carrier (APC) that contained a female medic during operations in Gaza.

In a letter addressed to the defense leadership, Rabbi Meir-Bar argued that decisions on matters with public resonance should consider broader implications and that common sense sometimes necessitates a more flexible approach than strict adherence to regulations. He criticized certain army regulations, suggesting they were drafted by individuals disconnected from religious law and emphasized the need to accommodate the lifestyle and worldview of religious soldiers.

The Chief Rabbi questioned the extent to which a religious soldier's rights are upheld when faced with situations that conflict with their beliefs, and whether their religious convictions should prevent them from serving. He urged for revised regulations that provide solutions for religiously observant soldiers.

Rabbi Meir-Bar highlighted that a significant number of religious individuals, including yeshiva students, are drafted into military service, even into combat units. He warned that punishing soldiers for adhering to their religious practices could hinder their integration into the army and potentially lead to a breakdown in their service.

"Reprisals against soldiers, whose entire offense consists of observing commandments, threaten catastrophe and the disruption of their service. I earnestly ask you to take my words into consideration and cancel the imposed punishment," Rabbi Meir-Bar concluded. Previously, 16 soldiers from the Rotem Battalion of the Givati Brigade were sentenced to 10 and 5 days in military prison for their refusal to share an APC with a female medic during combat in Gaza.
