Jerusalem Solo Dance Festival Proceeds Amidst International Boycott Efforts

The Jerusalem International Solo Dance Festival is scheduled to take place from September 15-19, proceeding despite challenges in securing international participants due to a boycott of Israel by segments of the cultural community. The fifth iteration of the festival will feature 17 artists from 11 countries, according to The Times of Israel.

Festival artistic director Miriam Engel stated that following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza, there has been a significant drop in responses from foreign dancers and choreographers. Engel explained that some artists are hesitant to travel to Israel due to security concerns, while others fear that participating in an Israeli festival could harm their professional reputations in their home countries.

Engel emphasized that the festival showcases individual artists rather than the state itself. She also noted that participants are not prohibited from performing works that are critical of Israel.

The Jerusalem Festival also encountered similar difficulties in inviting international artists this year, with some performers declining to come and others facing opposition from members of their own teams regarding participation, the publication reported.
