Iran Executes Two Alleged Coup Leaders and Issues More Death Sentences
Iranian authorities executed Javad Zamani and Abolfazl Saadi on Tuesday morning, describing them as the leaders of an armed uprising that erupted in December 2025. Officials said the men were convicted on religious charges, including “waging war against God” and “spreading corruption,” after using weapons and acting against “public order and security.”
The article says the case is part of a broader crackdown by the Iranian judiciary and the ruling clerical establishment, which it portrays as using harsh religious accusations to eliminate opponents and deter further unrest. The head of the judiciary in Semnan province said the two were put to death after their actions with weapons.
In recent weeks, Iran also announced the hanging of another man convicted of “enmity against God,” damaging public property, and conspiring against state security. Authorities said he took part in an attack on the governor’s office during protests in Isfahan Province. Separately, another person was executed on espionage charges for allegedly spying for Israel and the United States and passing classified information on Iran’s defense industries to foreign intelligence services.
At the same time, a court in Tehran sentenced four more defendants to death for taking part in the mass protests that followed Mahsa Amini’s death. They were convicted of “corruption on earth” over their alleged role in the killing of a student linked to the Basij. Four additional defendants in the same case received five-year prison terms for assembly, two more years for anti-state propaganda, and restrictions including a ban on social media use and exile from their home area. The sentences were reportedly delivered orally, without advance notice and without their lawyers present.
