AI Influence on Israeli Elections: Quarter Consider AI for Voting Decisions
A new survey by the Israeli Internet Association reveals a significant impact of artificial intelligence on the political landscape, with one in four Israelis considering using AI to help decide their vote in upcoming elections. Guy Shahar, a technology correspondent, discussed the survey's findings, calling these the "first AI elections in Israel" and questioning why people wouldn't ask AI for guidance on voting when they use it for other questions.
Shahar explained that this reliance on AI tools, which often depend on information from other websites, highlights the potential influence of algorithms and language models on public opinion formation leading up to election day. The survey also found that 71% of Israelis encountered fake news online related to elections, though Shahar noted this is only what respondents reported, suggesting actual exposure could be higher.
Furthermore, over half of Israelis, 57%, reported encountering fake accounts and impersonation online. Shahar warned that this situation could lead to critical decisions being made with the assistance of AI, urging the public to "exercise judgment and not rely solely on these tools."
