US Envoy Warns Turkey Over Israel Stance

U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has urged Turkey to contribute to regional stability amid significant tensions between Israel and Turkey. In an interview with The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Huckabee stated, "I don't think we really know yet whether they are helpful or not. We hope they decide to be." His remarks followed an Israeli airstrike on August 18th at Syria's Abu al-Duhur airbase, shortly before Turkish troops and air defense systems were scheduled to deploy there.

Following the strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would continue to act against any Turkish attempts to destabilize the region or threaten Israeli security. Huckabee interpreted the Israeli operation as a warning to Ankara, comparing it to a baseball pitcher throwing close to a batter to make them back off. He noted that the strike only damaged a runway, with no casualties or major infrastructure destruction, indicating the intent was a warning against Turkey's military proximity to Israeli positions in Syria.

Huckabee also expressed concern over the escalating rhetoric from some Turkish officials towards Israel, citing Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's description of Israel as a "problem for all of humanity" and a "burden." He acknowledged that some statements from Ankara are worrying Washington. Meirav Michaeli, an Israeli politician, described Turkey's current leadership as "extremist Muslim Brotherhood trying to export backwardness to the Arab world, which constitutes a threat to Israel."

The U.S. is also monitoring financial flows through Turkey that could benefit Hamas in Gaza, which Huckabee called a "serious problem." U.S. President Donald Trump is working to de-escalate tensions between these two Washington allies, maintaining good relations with both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Netanyahu. The U.S. administration is also establishing a mechanism to facilitate dialogue between Israel, Turkey, and Syria. This effort involves Tom Barrack, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria. Last week, Mossad Director Roman Gofman met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem to prevent escalation and restart dialogue. Huckabee indicated a communication channel now exists involving Israel, Turkey, the U.S., Syria, and Lebanon to foster discussions before tensions spiral out of control.
