Degel HaTorah Rabbis Weigh Replacing Veteran Lawmakers

Senior figures within the Degel HaTorah faction of the United Torah Judaism party are reportedly discussing potential changes to the party's Knesset list for upcoming elections. Discussions among the leading rabbis of the party are exploring the possibility of refreshing the slate with new candidates, with a decision expected by the end of the week, according to Ynet.

Among the potential changes being considered is the departure of veteran lawmakers Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev. These deliberations are fueled by disappointment within the Haredi public regarding the lack of progress on a bill exempting yeshiva students from military service. There is also a sense that insufficient action has been taken in response to sanctions and arrests of draft dodgers. The party anticipates these issues could impact their ability to garner support in the elections.

Names being considered for inclusion on the list include Menachem Shapira, deputy mayor of Bnei Brak; Yaakov Gutterman, mayor of Modi'in Illit; Lazar Rauchberger, deputy mayor of Jerusalem; and Miki Alper, chairman of the Degel HaTorah faction in Haifa. Other candidates are also under review.

Meanwhile, Gafni continued a tour of southern Israel, meeting with Rabbi Aviezer Pilz, a member of the Council of Torah Sages and head of the Tiferet Tzvi yeshiva. Rabbi Pilz praised Gafni's public service, stating, "Rabbi Gafni, who deals with public needs with faith. Great strength to you for all you have done and will continue to do for the Torah scholars and all of Israel. 'In every generation, they rise to destroy us, and the Holy One, blessed be He, saves us from their hand.' Be strong and courageous, do not fear and do not be dismayed!"

Despite these discussions, some within the Haredi street believe Gafni's replacement is unlikely at this stage, partly due to his historical standing as a representative appointed by Rabbi Shach.
