Israel's Power Grid Faces Major Bottleneck, Experts Warn

The electricity grid is identified as Israel's most significant bottleneck in energy infrastructure, according to Galit Cohen, a senior visiting researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS). Speaking at a conference, Cohen emphasized the need for a national project to address the grid's limitations, stating that current efforts, while ongoing, are insufficient and could be accelerated.

Experts at the panel, including Ady Levanon, CEO of Enlight, and Roni Sadeh, President of MedOne, discussed critical infrastructure planning for 2050. Shira Brand of the National Planning Directorate highlighted the goal of providing accessible, efficient, and affordable energy to all citizens by distributing energy sources logically across the country, moving away from long transmission lines. This aligns with a global trend of bringing energy production closer to consumers.

Sadeh pointed out the immense power demands of data centers, especially with the rise of AI. He noted that an AI server rack can consume up to 300-200 kilowatts, a significant increase from standard servers, creating a gap between AI technology's advancement and the supporting infrastructure. He stressed that data centers are crucial for national resilience, underpinning essential digital activities.

Cohen also raised concerns about preparing for multiple simultaneous crises affecting critical infrastructure like water, transportation, electricity, health, and food. She advocated for building resilience rather than just continuity, enabling the nation to withstand and recover from compounded disruptions.

Regarding local opposition to energy facilities, Brand explained that licensing authority has been transferred to a national body to streamline the process and overcome local hurdles. Enlight's CEO, Levanon, addressed the backlog of connection requests for server farms, advocating for a milestone-based system to ensure projects progress and prevent losing the race for AI infrastructure to other nations.
