Somaliland President Visits US Seeking Recognition After Israel's Acknowledgment

The President of Somaliland, Abdillahi Muhammad Ali, is expected to arrive in Washington D.C. in the coming days for his first visit to the United States since taking office. The visit, reported by Kan News on Tuesday, aims to garner American support for Somaliland's bid for official recognition of its independence. This follows Israel's acknowledgment of Somaliland's sovereignty last year.

President Ali's agenda includes meetings with various American officials, politicians, and members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Somaliland seeks to leverage the momentum from Israel's recognition to push for U.S. endorsement, which would be a significant step toward broader international legitimacy.

This U.S. visit comes approximately three months after President Ali's "historic" trip to Israel. Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, faces significant diplomatic hurdles. Most regional nations oppose its independence, with the exception of the United Arab Emirates. Prominent countries like Saudi Arabia and Turkey support Somalia's territorial integrity and back the Mogadishu government's stance, which rejects Somaliland's secession.
