Supreme Court President Warns of Rising Violence Fueled by Public Discourse

Supreme Court President Justice Yitzhak Amit has issued a stark warning about the escalating levels of verbal aggression online and from public figures, stating that such discourse is the precursor to physical violence. Speaking at a special conference held by the Israel Bar Association in memory of attorney Arbel Feldman, who was murdered, Justice Amit emphasized that violence against legal professionals does not emerge in a vacuum.

He pointed to the inflammatory statements made by public officials and the harsh rhetoric on social media as the fertile ground from which violence against the justice system grows. "If you wish to know the platform on which the seeds of violence against the justice system are sown, go to the statements of public figures, turn to social networks, and there you will find the answer," Amit stated.

The conference participants discussed practical measures to combat the increasing threats and violence, including legislative changes, harsher sentencing, enhanced immediate protection systems, and rapid intervention mechanisms for danger situations. Justice Amit noted that the disrespectful and violent discourse directed at judges inevitably seeps into courtrooms and affects lawyers.

He stressed the heightened importance of moderating this aggressive discourse, particularly during election periods when political and social tensions are high. While acknowledging that elections naturally involve debate and criticism, Amit urged everyone to exercise increased responsibility, choose their words carefully, and engage in substantive and respectful dialogue.
