Israel's Attorney General Clarifies Election-Adjacent Memorial Event Ruling
Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, has refuted claims that her recommendation to review the timing of a memorial event for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, due to its proximity to an election, was a general directive. She emphasized that the recommendation specifically applied only to government-funded events.
In a letter to the Director-General of the Ministry of Religious Services, Yehuda Avidan, Baharav-Miara stated that any assertion of disrespect towards Rabbi Yosef's memory was baseless. She clarified that the Ministry of Religious Services itself had requested that the event not be held on the actual anniversary of his passing.
Therefore, she concluded, both objectives would be preserved: the commemoration of the Rabbi and the safeguarding of election fairness. The decision pertains solely to the official, government-sponsored commemoration.
