Israeli Film Awards Return With Significant Cash Prizes After Last Year's Protests

Following last year's controversies, the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sport has announced the opening of nominations for the 2026 Israeli Film Awards. This marks the second year for the awards ceremony, which aims to bolster the local film industry through substantial financial incentives.

A total of one million shekels will be distributed among the winners across ten categories. Each category winner will receive a prize of 100,000 shekels. The ministry stated that the awards are intended to encourage excellence and creativity, and to foster the growth of Israeli cinema.

Minister Miki Zohar commented, "The awards are designed to honor creators in Israeli cinema, encourage original and quality work, and strengthen filmmaking in Israel." The categories cover various aspects of filmmaking, including Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, Best Animation/Short Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for at least 25 years of impactful work in Israeli cinema.

Eligibility criteria include filmmakers who are Israeli citizens or permanent residents with their primary life and work centered in Israel. Films must have completed production between September 23, 2025, and September 12, 2026. The deadline for submissions is November 10, 2026, with applications to be submitted online.
