Belgian Mayor Refuses to Host Israeli Soccer Team Over Political Stance
The mayor of Leuven, Belgium, Mohamed Ridouani, has refused to allow the Belgian soccer club Union Saint-Gilloise to host Hapoel Be'er Sheva of Israel in a Europa League match scheduled for October 22. Ridouani stated, "Union is welcome here, but if it concerns an Israeli team, then no, and I am consistent on this matter." He cited public safety concerns, recalling a previous refusal to host the Belgian women's national team for similar reasons.
The mayor, who is Muslim and a supporter of the Palestinian cause, has participated in protests against Israel and what he terms the "genocide in Gaza." His decision has sparked accusations of antisemitism.
Union Saint-Gilloise will now need to find an alternative venue for the home leg of the Europa League fixture against Hapoel Be'er Sheva. The mayor's decision applies even if the game were to be played without spectators.
