Top Lithuanian Rabbis Denounce Musical Selichot Events

Leading figures of the Lithuanian Haredi public, including Rabbi Dov Landau and Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, have issued a strong letter condemning the growing trend of musical "Selichot" (penitential prayers) events. The rabbis stated that these events, which incorporate musical instruments, are contrary to the sanctity of the Selichot period, intended for repentance and introspection before the High Holy Days.

The letter, titled "Trembling and Shaking at Your Coming," warns against transforming a sacred period into a form of entertainment. It highlights concerns about potential violations of modesty and holiness associated with these musical gatherings. The rabbis emphasized that such events should not be held in synagogues or houses of study, nor should prayers be accompanied by musical instruments.

The prominent rabbis are calling on municipal and political authorities to refrain from supporting or funding these musical Selichot events in any way. They urged the public not to participate in such gatherings, reinforcing previous rulings by other rabbinic leaders. The letter concludes with a prayer for the public to uphold ancestral traditions and be inscribed for a good and peaceful year.
