Lithuanian Faction of United Torah Judaism Considers Cabinet Posts

The Lithuanian faction of the United Torah Judaism party, Degel HaTorah, is reportedly considering seeking ministerial positions in the government for the first time. This marks a significant shift for the faction, which has historically abstained from government service on principle, citing concerns over Shabbat desecration and broad governmental responsibilities. The party is currently engaged in intense negotiations with the Hasidic faction, Agudat Yisrael, to finalize their joint Knesset list. According to rotation agreements, the chairmanship of the list is due to fall to Degel HaTorah's leader, Moshe Gafni, this term. However, the Lithuanian faction is now aiming for more than just leadership of the list, contemplating a bid for a senior cabinet role. This move follows a similar precedent set by Agudat Yisrael, which also avoided ministerial roles for years until Yaakov Litzman became the first Ashkenazi Haredi minister. Degel HaTorah's previous refusal to join coalitions stemmed from disagreements over draft exemption issues for yeshiva students. The faction is reportedly seeking rabbinical approval for this potential change in policy.
