Thousands of National Service Volunteers Delayed Amid Budget Crisis

The Israeli Ministry of Education announced that approximately 4,000 young women participating in national service will not begin their year of service as scheduled on September 1st, due to a budget freeze. The delay is expected to last at least until the following Sunday, with hopes that a solution will be found by then.

The crisis stems from coalition budget impasses, preventing the allocation of funds for these service positions. Without a legal and budgetary resolution, the positions cannot be funded, halting the integration of thousands of volunteers. National service organizations warn of severe repercussions, not only for the volunteers but also for educational, welfare, health, and community institutions that rely on their contributions.

Organizations highlighted that months of preparation, including job placements, contract signings, and apartment rentals across the country, have been disrupted at the last minute. "Everything is now up in the air. Apartments have already been rented, payments made, and service sites prepared to receive the volunteers, but as of now, they are not allowed to arrive," stated the organizations.

A similar crisis occurred several months ago and was resolved through joint efforts involving the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, and other parties. However, this time, no solution has yet been found, raising concerns that the national service year for thousands of young women may not commence on time.
