Report: FIFA may let Trump stay on stage at 2026 World Cup final
British media report that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to play a central role in the 2026 World Cup trophy ceremony, and may even lift the trophy with the winning team. FIFA has reportedly already told Trump it wants him to present the World Cup to the champions at the final, which will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The organization is also said to be leaving the decision to Trump on whether to leave the stage after handing over the trophy or remain with the players during the celebrations. That prospect recalls the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final, when Trump presented the trophy to Chelsea after its win over Paris Saint-Germain and then stayed on stage during the celebration, creating awkward scenes that were widely circulated online.
Chelsea captain Reece James later said he was surprised by the move. “I was told he would present the trophy and leave the stage, but he wanted to stay,” James said. Cole Palmer, the final’s standout player, also said he felt “a little confused” when he saw Trump remain beside the team during the lift.
According to the report, the White House expects Trump may again choose to celebrate on stage with the players. Representatives from Mexico and Canada, the United States’ co-hosts for the tournament, are also expected to take part in the closing ceremony. Trump, who became a regular presence at major U.S. sporting events during his term, missed the U.S. team’s opening match against Paraguay, with the White House saying he had a busy schedule.
