Israel's Election Deadline Looms: Parties Race to Finalize Lists

With nine days remaining until the deadline for submitting candidate lists for the 26th Knesset elections, Israeli political parties are in a critical phase of consolidation and negotiation. The final submission date is September 8th at 10 PM, after which the electoral map will become clear. Parties struggling to pass the 3.25% electoral threshold are facing intense pressure to form alliances or risk having their votes count for nothing.

Following the list submission, the Central Elections Committee will review candidates for eligibility, with potential disqualifications possible until 30 days before the election. Practical preparations for voting are also underway, including determining polling stations and arrangements for Israelis abroad. The election itself is scheduled for October 27th, with over 7.3 million eligible voters expected to cast ballots at more than 12,500 polling stations.

A recent poll by Channel 14 indicates the Likud party leading with 31 seats, followed by Gadi Eisenkot's party with 23. Other parties like Shas (10 seats), Otzma Yehudit (7 seats), and United Torah Judaism (7 seats) are also projected to pass the threshold. Notably, Ofer Winter's new party, "Am Israel," has entered the race, polling at 4 seats and just above the threshold, alongside the Religious Zionism party, also at 4 seats. Several other parties, including Blue and White and MK Sharren Haskel's "Israel First," are currently polling below the threshold.

The upcoming days are crucial for parties like Haskel's and Gilad Erdan's, who are below the electoral bar and are reportedly in talks for potential mergers. The consolidation of lists is expected to significantly impact the balance of power within the right-wing bloc, with Winter's entry potentially shifting votes among parties like Likud, Otzma Yehudit, and Religious Zionism. The final list submissions will clarify which parties will compete independently and which will merge, setting the stage for the final seven-week campaign leading up to election day.
