Haredi Draft Dodger Arrested Driving Stolen Car Faces Military Custody Amid Expected Protests

A Haredi draft dodger was arrested on Friday at the Ofer checkpoint near Jerusalem while driving a stolen vehicle. The man, a resident of Ashdod in his twenties, was handed over to the military police and detained in a military prison. The arrest followed a routine vehicle inspection by Border Police and checkpoint officers, who discovered the car was stolen and identified the driver as a draft evader.

Following the arrest, members of the Haredi community blocked Highway 443 in protest. Additional demonstrations by the Jerusalem Faction are anticipated throughout the coming week, including protests at recruitment offices tomorrow morning coinciding with a day designated for Haredi enlistment in combat units. Several politicians are expected to visit recruitment centers to show support for enlistees as part of their election campaigns.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding Haredi military conscription, with previous protests including a three-hour blockade of Highway 4 after another draft dodger's arrest.
