Finland Ends Direct Funding to UNRWA, Israel Welcomes Move

The Finnish government announced on Friday that it will cease its direct financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Finland's Minister for Foreign Trade, Ville Tavio, decided not to renew the aid agreement with UNRWA, which is set to expire soon. Instead, Finland will channel its funding for Palestinian areas through other organizations, such as the World Food Programme (WFP). Tavio clarified that the overall funding level will remain unchanged but will be redirected via alternative channels.

Israel welcomed Finland's decision, with the Israeli Foreign Ministry tweeting in English that it appreciates Finland's move to stop its multi-year funding to UNRWA. The statement highlighted Israel's position that UNRWA is linked to terrorism, citing evidence of UNRWA staff involvement in the October 7 massacre and the agency's close ties to Hamas. The Israeli ministry described UNRWA as "a center for terror" and emphasized that it is part of the problem rather than the solution.

This development reflects growing international scrutiny of UNRWA's role and funding amid ongoing tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finland's shift to indirect funding channels marks a significant change in European support for the agency, which has long been a major provider of aid to Palestinian refugees.
