US Ambassador to Lebanon Approved to Meet Hezbollah Amid Rising Tensions

According to a Lebanese report published on Thursday evening, US Ambassador to Lebanon, Michele Isaac, has received approval to meet with Hezbollah representatives. The US has yet to comment on this development. This comes shortly after the United States announced new sanctions against Hezbollah and updated its designation of the group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) organization, emphasizing Hezbollah's ties to the Iranian regime and the IRGC's Quds Force. However, a US official clarified that this is not a new sanctions listing, as Hezbollah has been designated under these authorities since 2001 and is also recognized as a foreign terrorist organization by the US.

Earlier on the same day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck Hezbollah infrastructure in the Nabatiyeh area of southern Lebanon. Israel also conveyed to the US through security channels that a pilot program in southern Lebanon, initiated following a memorandum of understanding between Beirut and Jerusalem, has failed. Israel expressed significant dissatisfaction with the Lebanese army's efforts against Hezbollah's terror infrastructure and militants in the region.

The IDF criticized the Lebanese army's performance, claiming it is ineffective in combating Hezbollah's presence in southern Lebanon. Senior IDF officials assessed that Lebanese Army Chief of Staff Rudolf Heikal continues to cooperate with Hezbollah, fears confrontation with the Shiite group's commanders, and is ineffective in operations to detect terror infrastructure and weapons caches.
