New ADL Report Reveals Widespread Antisemitism in US Teachers' Unions

A recent report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) exposes significant antisemitism within American teachers' unions, highlighting the challenges faced by Jewish educators. The study, based on surveys and focus groups with 307 Jewish union members, found that a majority of Jewish teachers have witnessed denial or minimization of the October 7 atrocities and experienced biased educational content related to Israel and Judaism.

According to the report, 74% of Jewish teachers feel compelled to self-censor within their unions, and nearly half have reduced their participation due to offensive rhetoric or behavior targeting Jews or Israel. Approximately 52% reported witnessing denial or downplaying of the October 7 events over the past year, while 49% heard the term "Zionist" used as a slur. Additionally, 44% noted that union events featured speakers who justified violence against Jews or Israel.

The report also reveals that 78% of teachers who said their unions promoted Jewish or Israeli-related curricula found these programs to be negatively biased. Despite these issues, many Jewish educators hesitate to file complaints due to fear of repercussions. Shira Goodman, ADL's Vice President for Public Affairs and Special Initiatives, praised Jewish teachers for their courage in attending meetings, filing complaints, seeking leadership roles, and working for change despite personal and professional risks.

Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL's CEO, emphasized that the problem is structural and cultural within the unions, not limited to isolated extremists. The report underscores a breach of the unions' foundational promises of solidarity, fairness, and respect for all workers, particularly affecting Jewish educators nationwide.
