Uman First Graders Celebrate Emotional Torah Ceremony Amid Ukraine War Tensions

In the midst of the tense war situation in Ukraine and logistical challenges, a heartwarming event took place this week in the city of Uman. First-grade students at the Keter Torah Talmud Torah school celebrated their 'Chumash Party' with a grand and solemn ceremony filled with reverence and holiness. The school, led by Rabbi Yaakov Jan and managed by Rabbi Peretz Kahan, serves as a beacon of pure community education in the heart of Uman's Jewish community.

The special event marked the culmination of months of diligent study by the young students, guided by their dedicated teachers Rabbi Nachman Renert and Rabbi David Sharar. The children proudly demonstrated their mastery of the Book of Leviticus, reciting verses with clarity and singing heartfelt songs such as "Better for me is Your Torah than thousands of gold and silver." The ceremony hall was beautifully decorated, and many parents and community members attended, moved to witness the next generation's devotion to Torah.

Speakers, including parents and educators, emphasized the significance of the occasion, especially as it comes just weeks before Rosh Hashanah, when Uman prepares to welcome tens of thousands of Hasidim from around the world to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. One speaker highlighted the contrast between the external turmoil and the internal spiritual resilience, stating, "While a fierce war rages outside and the entire region is gripped by fear and concern, here in Uman, the voice of Torah never ceases. The children of the house of learning sit, toil, and memorize the Torah of Moses. This is the true victory and existential guarantee of the Jewish people."
