UEFA President Ceferin Denies Political Pressure to Exclude Israel from Competitions

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin addressed the issue of Israel's potential suspension from UEFA competitions, contrasting it with the situation involving Russia. Speaking to The Rest Is Football, Ceferin emphasized that there was no political pressure to exclude Israel, unlike the significant political pressure UEFA faced to suspend Russia. He noted that while there was immense public pressure to exclude Israel, there was little public pressure regarding Russia's suspension.

Ceferin expressed his opposition to sports boycotts, stating he dislikes athletes suffering due to political decisions. He highlighted the impossibility of Russian players speaking out against their government and acknowledged the sadness of their four-year ban. Ceferin also mentioned the complexity of the situation, noting that many Russian youth players, who cannot vote, are affected by the ban, but they remain excluded from youth competitions for now.

Regarding adult competitions, Ceferin said UEFA cannot take further action until the conflict ends, a resolution they have hoped for over the past four years. He concluded by reflecting on the difficult balance UEFA must maintain amid political and public pressures surrounding these issues.
