UK Lawmakers Warn Sanctions on Israel Could Trigger US Retaliation and Trade Conflict

In the United Kingdom, concerns are rising over potential American reactions to sanctions proposed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham against Israel. British Labour Party members of Parliament have cautioned Burnham that imposing sanctions, particularly targeting the construction of 1,200 housing units in the West Bank, could provoke retaliatory measures from Washington and possibly escalate into a trade war between the UK and the US. This apprehension is fueled by recent US responses to similar European actions, such as the American administration's criticism of Ireland's legislation last month, which was described as "unhelpful" and warned of "unintended consequences" affecting hundreds of businesses.

Additionally, tensions between former US President Donald Trump and Spain over Spain's ban on imports from the West Bank have heightened fears in London. Trump previously threatened a full trade embargo on Spain amid broader disputes, including Spain's refusal to allow US military use of its bases for operations in Iran. Despite these concerns, Burnham is preparing to announce a significant sanctions package against Israel in response to the E1 expansion plan. According to The Times, at least 140 Labour MPs support these measures and are urging for sanctions that exceed those enacted by any other European country. They advocate expanding the trade ban beyond goods linked to the West Bank to include additional sectors.
