Google Sets New Android App Memory Limits and Auto Sign-In Rules for 2027

Google has announced two new quality requirements for Android apps distributed via Google Play, aiming to enhance performance and simplify device transitions. The first requirement targets app memory consumption, with Google evaluating dynamic memory use, Bitmap image handling, and DEX code optimization. These tests will cover active use, background operation, and memory retention states. Apps exceeding memory limits risk being slowed down or forcibly closed to protect device performance. Enforcement of these memory standards will begin in February 2027, with non-compliant apps potentially facing reduced visibility in the store and restrictions on advertising and updates.

The second requirement, effective April 2027, mandates Zero Tap Sign In for apps with user accounts. This feature will allow automatic login restoration when users switch from an old to a new Android phone without re-entering passwords. This aims to provide a smoother Android experience by requiring heavy apps to optimize and making device switching faster and easier. Developers are urged to start adapting their apps now to meet these upcoming enforcement deadlines.
