Tesla Launches Longer Model Y With Six Seats but Faces Comfort Challenges
Tesla has introduced a longer version of its Model Y, called the Model Y Long (Y L), designed to accommodate six passengers by adding a third row of seats. This new variant extends the vehicle by about 20 centimeters and includes two additional seats in the rear, aiming to serve families needing more space without launching an entirely new model. Despite maintaining strong performance with 444 horsepower, a 0-100 km/h acceleration in five seconds, and a top speed above 200 km/h, the Model Y Long faces criticism for its rear design and passenger comfort.
The rear seats, while equipped with individual screens and air conditioning vents, suffer from limited headroom and excessive sun exposure due to a large rear window and insufficient sun protection, making the third row potentially uncomfortable during Israel's hot months from June to October. The suspension also appears less effective in smoothing road imperfections compared to the regular Model Y, and the brake pedal feels artificially stiff. The front cabin remains largely unchanged and praised for its quality materials, excellent stereo, and user-friendly digital interface, although some controls feel outdated compared to newer Chinese electric vehicles.
Charging tests showed that the Model Y Long consumed 49% of its battery to travel over 200 kilometers at the lowest charging station in the world near the Dead Sea, with a declared range exceeding 600 kilometers. Charging from 50% to 80% takes about 20 minutes, and faster charging was observed under cooler conditions. The vehicle includes semi-autonomous driving features, though these may be limited under extreme conditions.
Priced at approximately 310,000 shekels, about 20,000 shekels more than the dual-motor standard Model Y, the Model Y Long offers extra seating but compromises on ride comfort and rear passenger experience. It is recommended primarily for larger families committed to the Tesla brand, while smaller families or those prioritizing ride quality may prefer the standard Model Y. Competitors like the Peugeot 5008 and BYD Tang offer true electric SUVs with three rows, contrasting Tesla's approach of extending an existing model.
